Quiet title action or Probate in California?

I had a co-tenant real estate partner who would not pay property taxes. I told him orally and by certified mail that I intended to oust him. A few months later, he died in a motorcycle accident. He probably died intestate, but with heirs. At that time, I recorded a notice stating that I intended to acquire 100% interest in the property by adverse possession. Five years have passed since I recorded the notice. I don’t believe the property has gone to probate. Assuming that I can satisfy the requirerments for adverse possession, what is my best course of action?
